People slipping and falling on the ice is leading to what's going around this week.

Nurse Practitioner Linda Eckerson at McLaren Greater Lansing - DeWitt Family Medicine is treating people with ankle sprains.

If your ankle gets swollen and hurts after you twist it, it's probably sprained. The area may bruise, too.

It's a good idea to see a doctor if you think you sprained your ankle.

You should also use the PRINCE approach:

--Protect the injury with a brace
--Ice the injured area
--NSAIDS should be taken to reduce pain and swelling
--Compress the area with an Ace bandage
--Elevate the injured area

For more severe sprains, you may need an x-ray to rule out a broken bone.
