Study: Less Than 20 Percent of Michigan Seniors College-Ready

A new study shows Michigan public schools are flunking when it comes to college-readiness.

The Department of Education analyzed ACT scores across the state. In order for a student to be considered college-ready, they had to score at least an 18 on English, 22 on Math, 21 on Reading and 24 on Science.

Nationwide, 24 percent of students meet this criteria. In Michigan, that number dips to 19 percent.

In Ingham County alone, Everett, Eastern, Webberville and Sexton were all found to prepare less than 7 percent of their seniors for college.

Even schools with high graduation rates couldn't get above 50 percent on the metric. Okemos led the way in Ingham County, but only 45.2 percent of its students met college readiness standards even though the school graduates 97 percent of its students.

"The nature of what our students are expected to learn both at the middle school and high school levels is not really strong enough, it's not a high enough set of expectations," said MSU education professor Bill Schmidt. "I think these results reflect that, that our children are not being challenged enough with the kind of math, the kind of english, the kind of other subject matters that are really necessary for them to be competitive in today's world."

This article seems to imply that most high school students should be college ready. I have to wonder how we ever go to the point of thinking we should all go to college. The typical college curriculum is still based on the concept of advanced study of a field, not advanced training for a modern world. It seems that our high school system should be changed to train most students to the level necessary to work in our society.
