The message from the Lansing School District Thursday was clear: 'our critics have been silenced.'

"We had a nearly perfect 31 out of 33 schools make Adequate Yearly Progress," Superintendent T.C. Wallace said.

"We knew this day would come, we knew this administration could get the job done," School Board President Hugh Clarke said at the press conference.

Clarke credit's Wallace's vision for turning the district around.

"This board has gone along with Dr. Wallace's bold initiatives, even if they were unpopular," Clarke said. "We have to continue to keep up the hard work."

For the first time in 5 years, two Lansing high schools made AYP. Eastern did not, but administrators said there have been modest gains that prove this school is heading in the right direction.

"We have praised Eastern for the gains its made, now we'll take a look at the program and we may tweak it a bit," Wallace said.

Two years ago, Wallace said the administration targeted secondary programs with emphasis on student proficiency, graduation rates, and test scores.

"When we do our job, the results are there," Wallace said.

Clarke said students, teachers, and administrators are now buying in to the plan -- and the results are plain to see.

"To do this should be able to silence people," Clarke said. "[The administration] had a plan and we're now seeing the fruits of that labor."
