Oakland University students reporting for the first scheduled day of classes have been greeted by striking professors at the Rochester campus.

A vote Wednesday night by the Oakland University chapter of the American Association of University Professors authorized their union representatives to call a strike after months of negotiations failed to produce a contract agreement

A Thursday morning message on the university's bargaining hot line says the school is open. A statement posted on the school's Web site says negotiations will resume at noon.

The suburban Detroit school's approximately 18,000 students have been advised to attend class, but leave if an instructor doesn't appear during the first 15 minutes. Online students are being told to log on daily.
