Millions of school children will be heading back to the classroom soon. Before they do, it's a good idea to review a few common sense tips to make sure your kids return to school safe and healthy.
Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The full backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the student's body weight.
If your child's school bus has seat belts, make sure your child uses one. If they walk, check out your child's route to school ahead of time to make sure it's safe.
When it comes to lunch, most schools publish menus ahead of time. This way you can pack lunches on days when your child prefers not to eat what's served. Pack sensible food and snacks like these (show: sandwich, fruit and FL multipack) in the right portions so nothing goes to waste.
Be sure to teach your child at least one of the following: his or her home phone number and address, your work number, the number of another trusted adult or how to call 911 for emergencies. This way if something does happen, help is only a phone call away.
