LCC Parking Problems

It certainly wasn't an ideal way to start the year for Alie Albert and Courtney Rouch.

Traffic back-ups.

"We waited in traffic for 45 minutes," Albert explains.

So many cars, such much gridlock, all out confusion is unavoidable.

"Should we turn here, should we go there, should we go around the block again?" Rouch asks.

Police were even directing traffic.

"Telling you to go around or telling you to go to other lots," Rouch explains.

So what's behind the delays? Yeah you guessed it, construction. The Accident Fund project is blocking the south artery into campus and the CSO project is doing the same for the north route-- making it close to impossible for students to get to class on time.

"It seems like there is a lack of the amount of parking," Albert says.

Yeah that's a problem too, by the college's own admission-- so they're taking steps to make sure what happened Thursday morning and afternoon will never happen again.

"We've put driving directions on LCC's parking website, we've done Twitter, we've done Facebook," Eric Glohr, Director of LCC's Auxiliary Services Department, explains.

Something the college says students should make a routine part of their morning, and the whole leaving the house ten minutes before class thing, isn't going to work this year.

"Do a little pre-planning, try to get here at least 45 minutes early," Glohr suggests.

And if all else fails... car pools, meters or public transportation will have to suffice.

Something Albert knows she'll have to put up with...

"I imagine this could get annoying considering I have classes four days a week," she says.

No matter how inconvenient.

The college tells us they plan to use the Lansing Center's parking lot starting Friday-- using a shuttle to get students to and from LCC.

As a former LCC student, this is no surprise. Parking was horrific every semester I was enrolled. Just wait a couple of weeks until students decide they don't really "need" to go to class to pass, it'll improve. The last semester I was a student, I got a semester bus pass which was the best $45 (the price then) I have ever spent...
