Schools Prepare For Swine Flu

The scrubbing, the soaping, the was all an attempt to prevent swine flu.

You probably remember hearing all about it when a local daycare and charter school thought swine flu may have shown it's face and shut down. But that was in May, a season not even known for the swine flu.

"Flu season will be upon us as we know it," Superintendent of Leslie Schools, Corey Netzley says.

So now schools and the Ingham County Health Department are gearing up to fight the virus when the season hits, to protect students.

"H1N1 seems to hit them harder than the regular seasonal flu," Marcus Cheatum of the Ingham Co. Health Department says.

The Leslie School District had a case of swine flu just last May and because of that, administrators have been working all summer to make sure that if the virus hits their halls again...they're ready.

"We're going to put out more information before school starts," Netzley says.

Not too much of a difference compared to last year, but Cheatum of the Ingham County Health Department says that may be the only thing that's the same.

"We want to try to do an immunization campaign to stop H1N1 from spreading," Cheatum explains.

The big question is whether or not enough of the vaccine will be around. Still, the department has other plans.

"One of the things we might do is have a flu room and if a staff member is coughing or sneezing, instead of shutting the school down, you take them to a flu room," Cheatum explains.

Steps that are necessary, he says, because as the swine flu continues to mutate, it becomes more and more unpredictable.

And it's better to be safe than sorry.

"We're as prepared as any school district can be," Netzley says.
