Lansing School District Superintendent Dr. T.C. Wallace Jr. issued the following statement Wednesday:

"In a series of community meetings at Grand River, Moores Park and Mt. Hope elementary schools, we listened to the passion and interest of each community which made valid arguments to keep their school open.

"Following a series of internal and external meetings, research and data presentations, it is the Superintendent's recommendation to the Board of Education to close Grand River Elementary School and Moores Park Elementary School at the end of the 2008-2009 school year.

"A detailed school closing implementation plan will be announced following any Board action to answer questions about how students and staff will be impacted in the new school year.

"We wish to thank all parents, students, staff and community members who participated in the community meetings and demonstrated support for their schools."

A spokesperson for the district claims this is a separate issue from the district's repositioning plan.
