The East Lansing High School Varsity Quiz Bowl team rode the awesome performance of captain Kurtis Droge to a fifth-place finish at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments High School National Championship in Chicago last weekend.
Coach Aram Kabodian's team was tied for first with a 9-1 record after day one, and finished with a 13-3 record behind schools from Bethesda (Md), Roebuck (SC), and Wilmington (DE).
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia won the title for the 4th time.
Droge was the tournament's best player. He was ranked number one in several categories, including most points scored by one player, and NAQT listed him as the #1 All-Star.
Along with Droge, Liz Fujita, Priya Moni, Danny Hirschel-Burns, and Ben Arnosti battled the top teams from Louisiana, Minnesota, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, Virginia, South Carolina, New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.
Coming into the tournament, Kabodian said the team's goal was to crack the top 10. They did that and more, capping a sensational Quiz Bowl season that also saw a state championship and Midwestern championship.
