Lawmakers Debate Giving Governor Power to Pick State School Boss

The state House is likely to decide this week on a constitutional amendment letting the governor appoint the state school superintendent.

That's currently the responsibility of the elected state Board of Education.

House Speaker Craig DeRoche says making the state superintendent a gubernatorial appointment would set up a clear chain of command.

The Novi Republican says that's important, in light of reports that the Department of Education failed to adequately track and remove teachers convicted of crimes.

The measure must be passed by a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and House, and approved by voters in a statewide election.
