It's day one and while the kids are just learning where their classrooms are, the Governor is predicting and expecting success from kindergarten on up.

"The fact that we instilled high expectations at every single grade starting in 2004 and adding a new grade every year has meant we have seen continual improvement," said Governor Jennifer Granholm. "Hope is an example of a school that signals that all kids can learn whether they're coming from a challenged background or not."

Granholm toured Mount Hope Elementary on Tuesday where even if students didn't know her name, they knew she was important. She spoke to the children about studying hard and doing their best each and everyday. They looked at her wide eyed and excitedly one. One student even asked if she was the President. She praised the school's success and high standard for education but said the bar needs to be set higher.

"We've been trying to instill the principles that they apply at Mount Hope across the state and that's why we adopted high school and elementary school curriculum increases several years ago and the results we're seeing statewide are also very encouraging."

There has been marked progress at Lansing Schools particularly here at Mount Hope but Granholm says it's not enough to keep standards where they are.

"I think we need more time in the seats and that means we've got to have longer days or more hours. I'm certainly willing to look at it in a flexible way. But the bottom line is other countries, other states are requiring more of their students and we've got to do the same."

She not only wants students to want more but for educators to demand more.

"The bottom line is you need more time to learn."
