Oil pulling is a health practice that has been around for thousands of years, and has recently become the latest health trend among holistic health believers
It is a traditional Ayurvedic method of swishing cooking oils (usually coconut, sunflower, or sesame oil) around in your mouth for about twenty minutes at a time.
Practitioners believe that "pulling" the oil between your teeth and around your gums as you swish it around in your mouth can boost oral health, whiten teeth, detox your body, and even improve your complexion.
The bacteria from your mouth, and in between your teeth, becomes trapped in the oil, as you swish it in your mouth. After twenty minutes or so, you spit the oil out into the garbage, and rinse out your mouth to remove any oil residue.
The practice has even caught on with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, and Shailene Woodley, star of the Hollywood blockbuster, Divergent. They practice it regularly and have said in recent interviews that they have noticed positive physical changes after oil-pulling, like clear skin and whiter teeth.
Dental health professionals have yet to sign off on the practice, saying that it needs to be more widely-studied to find out if the promises actually pay off.
