Few People Repairing Recalled Windstars

WASHINGTON -- The government is urging owners of recalled Ford Motor Co. minivans to get their vehicles fixed.
About 575,000 Ford Windstar minivans from the 1998 to 2003 model years were recalled in August over concerns that the rear axles could corrode and potentially break.
The recalled vehicles were sold or registered in regions where heavy use of road salt can cause more corrosion. That includes Canada, New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Great Lakes region.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said only about 75,000 of the minivans had been fixed by the recall, leaving a large number of vehicles still to be repaired.
Typically, 70 percent of recalled vehicles get fixed in 18 months.

My van has been sitting at a dealer for three weeks. Dealer says parts won't be availalbe until after the first of the year, possibly as late as March. Lynn -- you should be able to be reimbursed for your repair --- Call Ford customer service NOW. I would even take it in and have it looked at -- if you got a replacement from a salvage yard, it could be damaged. They corrode from the inside out, so damage is not necessarily visible unless your mechanic knows what to look for.

Just so you know, I did take my windstar into the dealership in St. Johns and they inspected it and determined that there was no crack present so they put it back together without fixing anything. I received a letter from Ford saying that when they had parts available to fix it I would be notified. Still waiting!! This may be affecting those statistics that were quoted.
