WASHINGTON (AP) -- Authorities say the U.S. Capitol and all Senate and House buildings were evacuated and fighter jets were scrambled after an airliner flying into Washington's Reagan airport went out of radio contact.

U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider says the plane entered restricted airspace heading towards the U.S. Capitol around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The FAA says Piedmont Airlines flight 4352 from Hilton Head, S.C., lost radio contact with air traffic control as it approached the area. The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled F-16 jets out of Andrews Air Force Base.

The evacuation order was called off after controllers made contact with the plane and it landed at Reagan.

Piedmont is a wholly owned subsidiary of US Airways. Airline spokeswoman Tina Swail says the airline is working with local authorities to investigate the incident.
