Officials say two women have been shot at a community college section of a Virginia mall and a suspect is in custody.

Christianburg city spokeswoman Becky Wilburn says emergency officials received a 911 call around 2 p.m. Friday about someone with a gun at the New River Community College satellite location in the mall outside of Blacksburg. The caller reported hearing shots fired.

She says two adult women had gunshot wounds. She says one was airlifted to the hospital and the other was taken by ambulance. Their conditions and identities are unknown.

She says authorities do not believe there's any continuing threat to the community.

Montgomery County Schools were briefly locked down as a precaution.

Officials did not provide any other information about the suspected shooter.

This is such a sad and avoidable event. We now know the most dangerous places around are the gun-free zones. I wonder how many people are aware there were two other theaters holding midnight showings of the Batman film much closer to the killer's apartment? Those two particular theaters permitted concealed weapons; the shooter selected a gun-free theater. Coincidence? Yeah, sure. I am sure this makes our college students feel much safer.
