The local man charged with two counts of dog fighting will face a jury.
Bernardino Gomez of Holt waived his right to a preliminary exam earlier this week--- meaning his case will go straight to trial. Gomez was arrested and arraigned on dog fighting charges in January, after nearly three years on the run.
Nearly thirty pit bulls were seized from his home on Grovenburg Road in April 2008. The dogs were found chained and confined in crates in the home's basement--- showing signs of abuse, neglect and hostility. Police also found dog-fighting literature. All but six of the dogs had to be put down.
If Gomez is convicted on those charges, he faces up to 8 years in prison.
