Suspected Dog Fighter Caught & Charged

After nearly three years on the run--- a suspected dog fighter will face a judge. Bernardino Gomez was arraigned on two counts of animal fighting last week.

News 10 first told you about Gomez in April 2008-- after nearly 30 pit bulls were seized from his Delhi Township home. Police were initially there to search for drugs-- but found dogs chained and confined in crates in the home's basement. Most of the pit bulls had signs of abuse, neglect and hostility. Police also found dog-fighting literature and other items to suggest Gomez had been fighting those pit bulls.

Not long after --- Gomez and his wife, Jamie--- took off, possibly to Colorado. Ingham County Animal Control got word this past weekend Bernardino Gomez had been caught and arraigned on dog fighting charges.

As for his wife Jamie, she was slapped with a $35,000 fine back in 2008--- the cost to care for the seized pit bulls while they were at the shelter. Animal control isn't sure what her status is at this time-- but there are no court records to show she's been charged with any crime.

Animal control tells News 10 it's hoping to have Gomez's court appearances scheduled for this week pushed back--- since many of the officers involved in the arrest aren't in this week. If there is enough evidence to send Gomez to trial and he's convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.

According To Animal Control, of the 29 dogs that were seized, about 6 of them were able to be rehabilitated and placed with families--- mostly because of their young age. The rest had to be put down.

Crystal, clearly this is a friend of yours & you were involved in his vicious circle. If you had ANY ounce of humanity you wouldn't be defending him. Did you not read the story?? "Nearly" 30.. 24 were euthanized. Do you even know what that means?? Killed, Crystal. Killed because of this troubled soul who obviously had issues growing up that you know about. The police were there looking to bust him for drugs back in 2008, not dog fighting. Did you read that too? Did you read that he took off? He's been "hiding".. did you read that?? Anybody who's innocent doesn't run and hide from the law. As for "Mike" (nice sign on name btw).. i'm hoping your comments were mere sarcasm and that you're really not that uneducated about pit bull owners. Thank GOD for the dog lovers who do own Pitties and KNOW how to take care of them.

KJ is right...Well Beth and RT like I said people have nothing better to do than worry about other people. Get a life. Don't comment if you don't do anything to make a difference. And if my kid....sister, brother or whatever/whoever was attacked it would still be wrong to happen to anyone. If you knew anything you would know that the news makes the story more than what it is. If they had something on him in 2008 they wouldn't have released him. First it was 24 dogs now it's 30..hmmm. How come there's no pics of the dogs...they always show pics. So like i said fabricating stories always gets for better news ratings. I never said what he did was right if that's what he did. All I'm saying is don't name call that's for Jr. High.

Crystal. You are so right! We should just take all you poor souls and put you in a pen and take bets on who wins. Of course, the fight would be to the death. Sometimes doing things like this create understanding and compassion.

To Crystal who thinks it's OK for someone to commit crimes and inflict pain and suffering on animals.... is it ok if you "have been through a lot" to commit crimes and be a cruel human being? Many people have "been through a lot" but they don't all become cruel criminals. And, where do you draw the line? Is it ok to commit assault on humans too?

Wonderful to know our Animal Control Department don't give up!! People like this are doing much more illegal activity than dog fighting, like inflicting pain and suffering on live animals isn't enough. These dogs don't ask to be fought....they don't want to fight. They are just doing what their owners are forcing on them.

Crystal...I'll bet you wouldn't have the same opinion and be willing to cut this guy the same slack if YOUR child was attacked by one of his dogs. I don't care what his poor little background was...there's NO excuse for torturing and abusing dogs like he did--I'm sick and tired of people who are always willing to make excuses for maniacs. This "tolerance" is what's wrong with our society today!!!

I can't beleive the comment about "innocent until proven guilty"!!! In the eyes of the court, that's how it stands...then there's the real-world. THE GUY HAD 30 DOGS IN CRATES IN HIS BASEMENT!!! The dogs showed signs of neglect, abuse, and hostility and 26 had to be euthanized!! He had dog-fighting literature (I'm sure he had that literature for research purposes only). I appreciate the idealism of innocent until proven guilty, but I'm NOT on a jury, and I'm able to see the forest for the trees...and so are the others who've commented on this story.

So wtf! Nobody has any idea of what this man has been through in life. There's always a reason for why people turn out the way they do! Mind your business! If all you can do is be negative then you're no better!

All people who do this to dogs should be drug out in. The street and be stoned. I am a pitbulls owner I don't care I would serve time for it . I can not stand the people who do this stuff.
