America's teens are using more marijuana and less alcohol, according to an annual government study of eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders across the country.
Some 6.1 percent of high-school seniors reported using marijuana this year, up from 5.2 percent in 2009, according to the Monitoring the Future survey released by the National Institutes of Health.
Marijuana use by 10th-graders climbed from 2.8 percent to 3.3 percent, and for eighth-grade students it edged up from 1.0 percent to 1.2 percent.
On the other hand, binge drinking is on the decline. While 23.2 percent of high school seniors reported having five or more drinks in a row, that's down from 25.2 percent a year earlier. The binge rate for this age group peaked at 31.5 percent in 1998.
The survey conducted by the University of Michigan covered 46,482 students in 396 schools.

To Jen: You said it perfectly. Marajuana has never killed anyone to my knowledge, and neither has a person who smokes marajuana harmed another person under the infulence! Why gov't will not accept marajuana but lets everything else go, I find mind boggling. But, back to the article, 6.1%?? Come on, who do they think they're talking to? Idiots? LOL!!!

Um, Jon, it's "legalize". The people who want marijuana legalized want it legalized for those over the age of 18, like much more harmful cigarettes, or 21, like deadly alcohol. Seriously stop the madness and wise up; marijuana has been proven to provide extremely beneficial relief to many and is nowhere near as harmful as many like to spread about in the form of nasty propaganda, so stop acting and speaking out so ignorantly. Marijuana has been used for CENTURIES and has never been proven to have directly killed anyone. I'm seriously to the point of just wanting to tell everyone who stupidly and off the cuff criticize without merit to shut the eff up already!

6.1 % seniors report to smoking marijuana?..............i read this as 93.9% of seniors don't tell the truth. but they were probably told how to answer by their teacher who is not mandated to drug test by the state. go figure.
