Gov. Rick Snyder is shrinking the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Development to handle just licensing and regulation, while moving most of its responsibilities to other departments.
The department's new name will be the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Steven Hilfinger will direct the new department, which will take on the added job of licensing health professionals.
A new Office of Regulatory Reinvention will be created in the department.
Responsibilities for job training will be moved to the Michigan Strategic Fund, which is part of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. The Michigan Next Energy Authority and Michigan State Housing Development Authority also will move to the Strategic Fund.
The state will continue overseeing occupational and health safety.
Snyder made the changes in two executive orders he signed Wednesday.
