Schauer Concedes

There was a sense of shock at the Schauer camp Tuesday after he lost his 7th congressional seat, but following his concession speech, he alluded to the fact that this was much bigger than him, or his campaign even, it was more about the national political trend.

"It's going to be a close loss when all the votes are counted," Schauer said, "but in a time when the cards were stacked against us, you almost pulled off a miracle."

Congressman Mark Schauer admitted he didn't plan on making a concession speech Tuesday night, but before a crowd of supporters at a Battle Creek Hotel, he didn't make any excuses either.

"I just called Tim Walberg and reminded him how important it is to represent all of the people of this district," Schauer said.

Tears were shed by staffers and supporters alike, but Schauer urged them to keep their heads up. The past two years, he said, were well worth it.

"You have literally saved businesses, communities and lives," he said.

Pundits are already suggesting the passage of Obama's health care plan was ultimately what took down the democrats this election cycle, but Schauer said if that's true, that's OK with him.

"If that vote cost me my job, then I will sleep like a baby every night for the rest of my life," Schauer said.

Schauer said he does not know what the future holds for him, only that he knows it will be positive. He did not take any questions from reporters afterward, so we could not ask him if he plans to run again. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
