President Obama will sign the Food Safety Modernization Act into law Tuesday morning.
It will give the FDA the power to force mandatory recalls when foodborne illness or other hazards are found in the U.S. food supply.
There have been many major food outbreaks over the past few years, including ones involving spinach and peanut products.
Companies linked to the outbreaks usually recall their products voluntarily but the new law will give the FDA the power to mandate recalls.
The government's power will extend to food that comes from foreign countries as well.
