EAST LANSING - A man accused of kidnapping his three-year-old daughter faced a judge in East Lansing Wednesday morning. Lester Pernell was arrested in Detroit last night and brought back to East Lansing. He was in District 54B court this morning, where he was arraigned on 5 charges, including kidnapping and home invasion. Pernell is being held on $500,000 bond.
East Lansing Police Captain Tom Johnstone say that Pernell was taken into custody around 9 o'clock Tuesday night in Detroit. He was arrested without incident. Police won't say how they discovered Pernell's whereabouts, but say he did not turn himself in. Pernell's daughter, was with him at the time. East Lansing Police drove the child's mother to pick up the girl. They are both back safely at home.
The three-year-old child and her father became the subject of an Amber Alert late Monday night. East Lansing police say Pernell broke into his ex-girlfriend's home at the Deer Path Apartments in East Lansing. Police were told the mother was assaulted and Pernell took the child with him.
The search began after that. There were reports that Pernell could be heading for Detroit, or North Carolina or even Atlanta. Ultimately he was located 24-hours later in Detroit.
