PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say three of the four children who were shot and killed by their mother today had been able to escape from the home and tell a neighbor they had been shot.
But they say the mother then emerged from her house and calmly told the children to come back home. And when they did, she shot them again, before taking her own life.
The children ranged in age from 12 to 17.
Authorities say one of them, a 15-year-old boy, had recently been arrested on a domestic violence charge. It's not clear what he was accused of doing, but a pastor at a church the family attended said it was "normal stuff," and that the boy had been "punching some walls or something."
One neighbor told deputies that the mother sent a text message in the middle of the night last night, saying she wanted to be cremated with her children. The neighbor didn't see the text until he awoke this morning, after the shootings took place.
The shooting happened in Port St. John, about 15 miles west of Cape Canaveral.
