Movie Studio Deal Sours

Hundreds of Allen Park residents and others gathered last summer for a celebration at the site of what they hoped would become a big, successful Michigan movie studio.

That groundbreaking ceremony featured a lot of smiling faces and much praise for Unity Studios President Jimmy Lifton.

Now, eight-and-a-half months later, things have gone in the wrong direction for the once-promising partnership.

The Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday that Allen Park is threatening to evict Unity Studios from its city-owned facilities.

The newspaper says Lifton has failed to make rent payments to the city and hasn't produced required documents outlining the venture's financial condition.

A message seeking comment was left for a Unity Studios spokesman.

Unity Studios' response to news reports on City of Allen Park lease May 11th, 2010 In response to news reports that Unity Studios has defaulted on our lease we provide the following: Unity Studios is current on all lease payments and not in default of our current lease with the City of Allen Park. We regret that private negotiations with the City of Allen Park regarding our lease have become public. However, we deny missing rent payments or being unable to pay our lease. To the contrary we have made all payments, included a disputed amount, in good faith. We have provided documentation (cancelled checks and bank statements) to the Detroit Free Press, Crain's Detroit Business,as well as numerous TV stations, proving our payments have been made and that we have disputed the amount the City of Allen Park billed Unity Studios for rent. It is our hope and intention to work out any differences with the City of Allen Park in order to remain in our current lease and continue to build Unity
