General Motors plans to nearly triple the number of cars it produces in India to meet growing demand there.

The announcement comes weeks after the company said it would slash 30,000 jobs and scale back production in the US.

Company officials insist jobs aren't being moved from the US. They say much of the new production will come from current workers putting in more hours, although some new jobs will be added.

GM currently employs about 2,000 people in India. The goal eventually is to reach 80,000 vehicles.
