GOP Lawmakers Push Economic Plan Forward

Legislation that would enact a state House Republican plan to boost the economy by lowering some taxes took a step forward Tuesday.

The House Tax Policy Committee voted 10-0 on each of the three bills in the tax reform package. Only Republicans voted for it. Five committee Democrats passed when it was their turn to vote as a nod to the ongoing negotiations between the two parties on the issue.

The legislation now goes to the full House, which is expected to take it up Wednesday. The legislation would make a number of tax policy changes, including giving some tax credits to manufacturers and commercial businesses to help with their property taxes.

Governor Granholm's administration opposes the legislation because it cuts taxes without finding a way to offset the revenue that would be lost.
