Michigan Trooper Shot in Traffic Stop Dies

HART, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a Michigan state trooper has died after being shot during traffic stop in western Michigan and two people are in custody.
Michigan State Police issued a news release late Monday saying Trooper Paul Butterfield had died during emergency surgery at Munson Hospital. Butterfield had stopped a vehicle at 6:20 p.m., and three minutes later a motorist called 911 to report the officer had been shot in the head.
The release says a vehicle was located based on information Butterfield had called in and that police located two suspects at a gas station in Wellston, Mich. about 8:30 p.m. Police exchanged gunfire, and one suspect was shot.
A male and female were taken into custody and the injured suspect was taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
