A southwestern Michigan excavating company has been fined $8,400 after an employee was killed in a trench collapse.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Friday the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the fine and four safety citations against Mattawan-based C. Johnson & Son Excavating Co. following a probe into the September death of 58-year-old Samuel Wilson. He was installing sewer piping in a trench at a house under construction in Oshtemo Township.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Among the citations: a lack of support to keep the trench from collapsing.
Company Vice President Linda Johnson said Friday officials believed they were following construction standards, but the company is cooperating with state regulators. She said the company is still grieving the loss of its longtime employee.
