In Okemos, Dr. James Brouillette at Ingham Community Medical Center, a partner of Ingham Regional Medical Center, is treating insect bites.

Symptoms include: redness, swelling and itching near the bite area. This is basically the result of a small, local allergic reaction.

While a bug bite can usually be effectively treated at home, there can be complications that require medical attention.

First, clean the area with soap and water.

Ice can help with swelling, and medications like Zyrtec and Claritin can help with the itching in kids age two and older.

Try to keep children from scratching at the affected area, as that can lead to infection.

Warning signs that a more severe allergic reaction may be occurring include: trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, and other symptoms that are not just at the site of the bite or sting.
