We start in Cascade Ridge, where Dr. Margo Ferguson with Allegiance Family Medicine on Spring Arbor Rd. is treating conjunctivitis, or pink eye.

Common symptoms include: crusty eyelids; red, swollen eyes; mucus or watery discharge; mild sensitivity to light and itching and burning in the eye. You may also have the feeling that something is in your eye.

Pink eye is extremely contagious.

It should go away in seven to ten days.

Bacterial conjunctivitis requires antibiotics.

Viral pink eye should clear up without medical treatment. You can take an anti-inflammatory for itching, pain, and redness. Try cold compresses to relieve swelling.

Nurse Practitioner Amy Davies at Allegiance Family Medicine in Jackson says ear infections are going around.

Symptoms include: earache, fever, fluid coming from the ear, swollen outer ear, reduced hearing ability and dizziness. Babies may pull at their ears.

A doctor will treat an ear infection with antibiotics, pain relievers or ear drops.

At home, a warm washcloth over the ear and rest may also help with symptoms.

In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care is treating acute bronchitis.

The primary symptoms are wheezing and a persistent cough. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue and chest discomfort.

Bronchitis will usually clear up without specific treatment.

You should rest, drink fluids, and breathe in warm moist air through a humidifier.

Asthmatics should stick to their prescribed regimen.

See a doctor if your cough is severe, you have a low-grade fever for more than three days, or you have chronic lung or heart problems.

If you cough up bloody mucus or very discolored mucus, that indicates a bacterial infection, so you should see a doctor.

Bronchitis is usually the result of a viral infection, so antibiotics aren't effective in treating it.
