What's Going Around

We start in Michigan Center, where Dr. Rubina Shaikh with Allegiance Family Medicine is treating strep throat.

Symptoms of strep include a sudden, sore, red, swollen throat without cold symptoms like coughing and sneezing.

You may have a fever, swollen glands or tonsils, headache, bad breath and whitish-yellow patches on the back of the throat.

Kids with strep might also have stomach pain, vomiting and a red rash with small spots.

To treat strep, you need antibiotics, so see your doctor. Most people will feel better within two to three days of starting the medication.

In the meantime, drink fluids, gargle with salt water, suck on hard candies or lozenges and use a humidifier or vaporizer.

In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care is treating upper respiratory infections with flu-like symptoms.

The hallmark symptom of the URIs Dr. Perry has been treating is a bad persistent cough that can hang on for as long as a couple of weeks.

Other symptoms include: congestion, runny nose, headache, sore throat, post-nasal drip and possibly a low-grade fever.

Many URIs will clear up on their own.

Make sure you get plenty of rest. You can try cough drops or hard candies to soothe a sore throat, and drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Tylenol or Motrin can help with pain and fever control.

People with asthma should call their doctor, as breathing treatments may be warranted. In all cases, asthmatics should stick to their prescribed regimen.

Symptoms should begin to improve after about three days, although it may take more than a week for many symptoms to go away completely.
