In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care is treating insect bites from mosquitoes, spiders, wasps and bees.
Symptoms include: redness, swelling and itching near the bite area. This is basically the result of a small, local allergic reaction.
To treat a bite, first remove the stinger, if there is one, to prevent more venom from entering the body.
Clean the area with soap and water and apply ice.
Antihistamines like Zyrtec or Claritin can help with allergic symptoms like itching. Hydro-cortisone cream or a baking soda paste can help too.
Try not to scratch. Scratching can break open the skin, leading to an infection.
In certain individuals, insect bites and stings can cause a severe allergic reaction. If you have trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, faintness, rapid heartbeat or hives, seek treatment immediately.
