What's Going Around

It's common in kids and it's going around this week in mid-Michigan.

Dr. Dennis perry at Meridian Primary Care in Okemos, a partner of McLaren Greater Lansing, has seen a lot of cases of coxsackievirus, which is commonly seen as hand foot and mouth disease in younger children.

Symptoms include: body aches, headache and fever. Young adults and adults will have a bad sore throat, fever, possibly nasal congestion, and a fine pink skin rash.

Antibiotics aren't effective because it's a virus.

Dr. Perry recommends rest, drinking fluids, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers or fever reducers.

Most cases go away within a week or so, but it's a good idea to keep in touch with your family doctor. If you or your child have joint pain, severe headache or very high fever, your doctor may want to see you.

The virus is very contagious and can be spread from person to person on unwashed hands or through coughs and sneezes.

Dr. Perry is also treating upper respiratory infections with a bad cough. It seems to be going around local schools.

Symptoms include runny stuffy nose, sore throat, fatigue, low-grade fever, headache and cough. Expect a cold to last for three to four days and the cough to linger for longer.

To treat a U.R.I., rest, take Tylenol or Ibuprofen, and drink lots of fluids. Breathing in steam can help loosen congestion.

If your symptoms haven't improved after 10 days, or if you have a high fever, you should see a doctor.
