It's mosquito bites that local doctors are treating this week.
Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care in Okemos, a partner of McLaren Greater Lansing, says that's what's going around.
Most bites are harmless but sometimes one can cause a large area of swelling, soreness and redness. That's basically the result of a small, local allergic reaction.
Most mosquito bites stop itching and heal on their own. You can apply hydrocortisone cream or an antihistamine. Also, ice the area to help with swelling. For stronger reactions, take an oral antihistamine like Benadryl.
If you have a severe allergic reaction, seek emergency care. Signs of a severe allergic reaction include trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, or hives.
