What Is a Derecho?

If you were on Facebook or Twitter Wednesday, you may have seen warnings about something called a "Derecho".

It is a Spanish word meaning direct or straight ahead. Talking about winds that come out of a line of storms in the forward direction.

To forecast for one is not an exact science. It is a cluster of downburst winds that push forward at high speeds. To predict that the winds will only go in that direction is hard to do with accuracy. Bow echoes and micro bursts are more common.

May 31, 1998 a derecho moved across Wisconsin and our state with 130mph straight line winds. At this point we are not expecting that and most likely will see it be mainly south.
