Reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber captured her third straight American Cup at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, finishing with a score of 61.032 to beat teammate Aly Raisman by two-tenths of a point in the first major prep for the London Games.
It was the first competition for the 16-year-old since she claimed the World All-Around title in Tokyo.
Wieber began her day with a solid performance on vault, however she struggled a bit on the uneven bars.
Moving on to beam and floor, she recovered with solid performances in both events.
The win will be the start to a very busy year for Wieber. She will be in action again in two weeks at the Kelloggs Pacific Rim Championship.
Wieber's American Cup win has some historical significance. The last three winners of the American Cup when it was held at Madison Square Garden went on to win the Olympic All-Around title. They include Nastia Liukin in 2008, Carly Patterson in 2004 and Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
