DETROIT (AP) -- The grounds, interiors and exteriors at a dozen Detroit schools are being cleaned and spruced up in preparation for the Sept. 3 first day of classes.
Volunteers, local businesses and community organizations are taking part Saturday in the 7th Annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day.
PNC Bank, Wayne State University, Hot Sams, Chrysler LLC, the Detroit Parent Network and Meijer are some of the companies and organizations that have adopted schools as part of the program.
The work includes painting playground equipment, planting flower beds, painting murals in hallways and boarding up an abandoned home near one of the schools.
ARISE Detroit! is a coalition of more than 400 community groups, churches, block clubs and businesses.
