Haywood Greenwood has lived near the intersection of Jolly and Waverly roads for 11 years. You could say he's familiar with the area's crime.

"I've seen incidents around here. I mean there's always shooting," said Greenwood.

The Lansing Police Department is familiar too. That's why it named the intersection a 'hot spot' for the Capital Area Violent Crime Initiative's recent three-day crime crackdown.

On Monday, members of the initiative, lead by LPD, released the results of efforts from its first major operation. From June 13th to 15th, officers from Lansing Police and M, as well as other departments, actively policed several 'hot spots' around the city.

Not just the Jolly-Waverly intersection, but the Holmes-MLK intersection, parts of Kalamazoo Street and other areas. The initiative takes a three-pronged approach, starting with undercover operations. Those are followed by uniformed operations and it all leads up to a full-scale, multi-day crackdown.

"What we're saying is that we're going to use intelligence-led, data-driven policing and putting in strategies to holding those accountable for violent crime in our communities," said Lansing Interim Chief Mike Yankowski.

Lt. Tom Kish of Michigan State Police was part of the operation that included more than 60 arrests and nearly 200 traffic stops.

"People felt safe. They walked out in their front yard or driveway or down the street and there were police cars out working," said Kish. "They could see Michigan State Police, Ingham County Sheriff's Department, Lansing Police Department."

Chief Yankowski hopes it's the beginning.

"It's just a small, little snippet of what's to be expected from this program."
