As thousands of union workers finished marching in Detroit's Labor Day parade, Monday, many of them headed just a couple of blocks down the street to where Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to speak at noon.

At the time for Biden's appearance neared, the crowd's excitement built.

"He really understands Detroit and where we're at right now and where Michigan's at right now with the struggle that Michigan families are having," said Maureen Miller-Brosnan of Livonia.

The crowd of around 3,000 erupted as Biden emerged from Detroit's Westin Book Cadillac Hotel and listened closely as he praised the Michigan workforce.

"You are the most productive workers in the world," said Biden.

He gave auto workers credit for restoring the auto industry, listing local plants that added jobs within the last year. He also criticized the Romney campaign.

"He said, 'guaranteeing the government will keep its fire, police and teachers intact is not an effective way to get the economy going," said Biden.

The day was a special one for the union workers who attended Biden's speech, but it had particular significance for one Lansing Firefighter.

"I was a little dumbfounded," said Eric Weber, on when he found out he would introduce the Vice President. "To have the President represented here in Detroit, in Michigan, on Labor Day, is pivotal."

To counter Biden, Michigan Republican Party Chairman, Bob Schostak, held his own rally just down the street.

"He's let labor down," said Schostak. "They are getting hurt the most through the policies of Biden and Obama."

But that did not keep Biden from giving his final message of the day.

"Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive," said Biden.

This is the second year in a row a member of the Obama administration has visited Detroit on Labor Day. President Barack Obama spoke last year.
