CHARLOTTE, EATON CO - The Michigan Works! service center in Charlotte was ransacked overnight. A janitor arrived at the building at 311 West First Street at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning to find windows smashed, doors busted, and computers destroyed. Police say the vandals entered the building by breaking through a classroom window. The building used to be the site of an elementary school.
Nearly every room of the facility was vandalized. Police say the officers collected evidence indicating the vandal or vandals injured themselves during the rampage. Charlotte police searched the neighborhood asking about any suspicious activity overnight. No arrests have been made. They continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlotte police at 517-543-1552.
The Charlotte Michigan Works!, a job search and retraining center, remained closed all day Wednesday, while the investigation was conducted and clean up occurred. Tim Price, the center's director, says that 10-12 computer monitors and 4 or 5 computers were destroyed, as well as two large screen televisions. He did not have an estimate on the cost of the damage. It did not appear anything had been stolen. Price says that Michigan Works will be back open at its normal time Thursday morning at 8 o'clock.
