MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Police in Meridian Township are identifying the mother and child that were found dead in a home there this past weekend. 31-year-old Caylen Mae Ottensman, and her 6-month-old Cian Hoyt Ottensman were found at a home on Pine Creek Circle in Haslett Saturday. Police went to the house after receiving a missing person call from Caylen's father. A statement from police released Thursday says, "From a cause yet to be determined, the mother went unconscious and accidentally smothered the child."

The Meridian Township Police Department is releasing the following statement on behalf of the family: "This was an accidental death and a tragic accident. We ask for love and compassion for all in our community who struggle with the challenges of bipolar disorder."
