Two Legislators Banned from Speaking after Debate on Abortion Bill

A story out of the Michigan legislature is making national headlines.

Rep. Barb Byrum, D-Onondaga, and Rep. Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield, were banned by Republican leaders from speaking during session on Thursday after a debate over a bill to regulate abortions.

Since the story broke, both legislators say they've received an outpouring of support from people around the nation. This is what Rep. Brown said in an interview with WDIV in Detroit.

"From my side of the aisle I've had a lot of support and outcry from people really across the country just thanking me for being a voice for women."

Republican leaders accused the representatives for behaving unprofessionally, while critics call the leaders' action a 'War on Women.'

Republicans deny the sanctions had anything to do with gender, arguing a male representative was stripped of his committee assignments just last week due to unprofessional behavior on the House Floor.

Regardless, Bill Ballenger from Inside Michigan Politics sees it as a bad political move.

"We've already had one case here earlier in the year where Gretchen Whitmer, the Senate Democratic leader accused a Republican state senator of sexism...Republicans politically should've realized that they were just throwing gasoline on the fire of an already raging controversy," said Ballenger.

Excuse me, but Ms Brown has as much right as anyone else to speak her mind. I am sick of foaming at the mouth jerks on both sides. A woman has a right to decide about her own body. It's not your choice to make, and changing the law will not stop a woman from making a choice and doing what she wants with her own body.

Ms Brown does not speak for the women in Michigan who have a brain. She is an embarrassment to most of us and is making something out of nothing as do most democrats.

"Making something out of nothing" that was the 2008 GOP strategy, and the whole basis for which the Tea Party stands.

Remember, byrum's mommy probably told "princess" that she can speak her mind and should not be interupted. Like mother like daughter.

Way to go Gord, way to tell that woman what the election is really about. Its different for every voter by the way. I thought thew last election was about the economy, or was that election about gas Prices, or was it about protecting the "White" house, or was it Jobs (Is that the same as the economy?), or was it about the Wars?

Democracy is almost dead in Mich. The Republicans are out of control. They need to be removed at any cost.

Please read the bill. 20 weeks is nearly the 5th month. They are also pretectig a woman from being coerced into an abortion. By say a boyfriend. The bill requires that any woman getting an abortion be educated on all the options. And if a woman chooses to have an abortion it establishes that counseling services be provided if necessary. Read the bill then make your decision.
