Thousands Still Waiting for Power

The sound of generators has filled neighborhoods across the region, including in Williamstown Township-- day after, after day, after day.

Still many like Tom Schwab don't have one.

"The reality was, there is no such thing as electricity in this subdivision," said Tom Schwab, who doesn't have power.

Three weeks ago Schwab hired a contractor to paint his home the week before Thanksgiving. He wanted to have everything ready for his kids and grandkids.

Then the power went out and it hasn't come back since Sunday's storm.

Schwab has lost all the food in his fridge. While he jokes about the situation, it's starting to get a little frustrating.

The painter is also worried. She can't sand or paint and the prep work is mostly finished.

"My deadline is, I got people coming over for Thanksgiving too, so it [the outage] puts behind also," said Pat Cornwell, of Pat's Painting in Webberville.

Schwab said his neighborhood has an outage every year, and every year they're the last one's to get the lights back on.

Neighbors said it all comes down to where you live. While they haven't had power for five days, the homes directly behind them never lost power. Those houses are Consumers energy customers, whereas they are DTE customers.

His range and fireplace is the only heat Schwab has.

"We had our 12th largest storm in the company's history," said Erica Donerson, a DTE spokesperson.

DTE thanks customers for their patience, and said crews are working as quickly as possible to restore power.

"Some of the outages have proved more challenging than initially expected," said Donerson. DTE said its customers should have their power restored by Friday evening.

While Schwab is hoping for the best, he is starting to think about plan B-- for Thanksgiving

"We'll play it by ear," said Schwab. "I've been known to buy a hamburger for everybody."
