A temporary leadership appointment has been announced for the East Lansing Police Department.

Deputy Chief Juli Liebler will supervise the East Lansing Police Department during the selection process of a new police chief. City Manager Theodore Staton made the announcement Monday.

Deputy Chief Liebler's appointment will take effect on November 1. Liebler has indicated that she will not be a candidate for the position on a permanent basis.

Liebler's temporary appointment comes after Police Chief Tom Wibert accepted a position with a department in New Braunfels, Texas. The city of East Lansing plans to appoint a new police chief by March of 2011.

According to the city of East Lansing, the selection process will include a series of meetings between Staton and university and community groups. The city manager will also meet with groups of police and city employees to decide on the qualities desired for a future East Lansing police chief.
