State Police and the FBI are investigating a suspicious substance found on an envelope addressed to Governor Rick Snyder. Curt Wiess, a spokesman for the Department of Management & Budget tells wilx.com the it was a granular substance similar in texture to salt and pepper. A state worker in the Constituent Services office at the Romney Building felt an irritation on his hand when he opened the letter around 2:15. He rinsed his hand off and did not need medical treatment.

The staff followed procedure by putting the envelope in a zipped bag and calling a postal inspector. It did not have a return address. The letter inside the envelope was incoherent ramblings according to Wiess. Investigators are not saying where it was post-marked.

A fire department hazmat team and State Police responded to the Romney Building, which was not evacuated. MSP investigators took custody of the envelope and letter. Governor Snyder is on Mackinac Island for the annual Mackinac Policy Conference. He has not commented on the incident yet.
