ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) -- A West Michigan student who settled a lawsuit with Grand Valley State University over her right to keep a guinea pig in her campus apartment has been lauded by an advocacy group. reports that the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan has given Kendra Velzen its annual Outstanding Effort by an Individual award.

The group says Velzen was honored for promoting "equal housing opportunity for university students throughout the country."

Velzen sued Grand Valley State University last year, saying the school violated federal housing rules. She said the guinea pig helped her cope with physical and emotional challenges.

The Allendale school reached a $40,000 settlement earlier this year with Velzen and the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, which supported her efforts. Grand Valley State denied improper action.

This means Michigan's taxpayers have been robbed of $40,000. And for this twit of a woman to be called some kind of hero just compounds the disaster. She should have been tossed out of the housing rather than rewarded.

I have a therapy llama that I intend to bring with me to U of M in the fall. He helps me cope with my Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I look forward to this case opening the door to accommodations for Melvin at U of M in the fall.

$40,000 hush money because it was cost the school more than that to keep it going. Whenever they discussed it at a president's meeting, it was costing them somewhere between $10 to $20 a minute and since it made the news the school probably wasted over 1000 man hours on it.
