A Michigan state senator has been injured after getting his hand caught in a snow blower while fending off a pit bull attack.

Highland Park Democrat Bert Johnson was recovering Tuesday. The Detroit Free Press and Booth Newspapers say the incident happened Monday afternoon while Johnson was clearing snow hear his home in the Detroit enclave.

Johnson says the pit bull charged him while he was clearing snow. Johnson says he slipped and put a hand down to try and steady himself. The hand got caught in the snow blower.

The 37-year-old drove himself to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery to help repair and reconstruct his hand.

2008 numbers show that Pitts make up 5% of the estimated dog population, and accounted for 65% (15) of dog bite Fatalities. In 2008, only one U.S. citizen over the age of 3 was killed by a breed other than a pit bull. 70% of the attacks occurred to children 11 years and under. Its an interesting page, it gives a brief description, case by case of all the fatalities in 2008

Gee...ANOTHER pit bull attack incident--imagine that? Seems like every time there's a story about someone being attacked by a dog it's PB.

MikeHunt, will you please stop your ignorant spouting off about how all people who own pit bulls are automatically drug dealers and the like?!?!? You have to be about the most ignorant person I have ever encountered on any message board anywhere - you are full of nothing but ignorance and hatred. Yeah, I bet you did a "study" around Jackson - it was probably a poll of all the other nasty, drunk, curmudgeons you hang out with at the local bar.

The majority of dogs in the animal shelters are pit bulls. There are vets that spay pit bulls for free. These dogs aren’t wanted (accept by meth dealers and crack heads) and should be outlawed. If I ever see one in my yard, I will euthanize it per Smith & Wesson to protect my family. Pit bull owners, WAKE UP!!! You don’t have the right to threaten the rest of the world because you want to own a ghetto dog!

Been around many dogs over the years, having worked as a teen at a prestigous obedience/guard dog training kennel and exposed to many different breeds, I know from experience that Pits are genetically engineered for their ability to initiate and withstand attack without the need or regard for a human command (loose cannon). You will never see one trained as an actual guard dog. Some dogs like to point or jump into the water after birds and gently pick them up for their master, some like to herd other animals or pull a sled, or bring down a racoon, or sit and look pretty. They can all be cuddly and friendly as well, but you can't stop what is in the DNA, and you can never accurately predict what any animal will do when left to their own devices or instincts.

Posted by: Dave Location: DeWitt on Feb 22, 2011 at 06:47 PM Let's outlaw these dangerous dogs. No, you don't have a right to endanger the rest of us by owning these dogs. Let's outlaw alcohol, guns, cars, bats, bikes, knives... You have no right endangering the rest of us by using/owning these things... ;)

Wow such ignorance. So we are all expected to take this politicians word on what breed of dog it was? I guess politicians are now dog breed experts. Huh never knew that was part of their educational backgrounds...This is just a wild guess but; I would guess that this moron will soon be taking up anti-pit bull legislation with this being his launching point.
