TAYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a Michigan State Police trooper has been killed in a rollover crash near Birch Run while on his way to help Saginaw County sheriff's deputies chase a motorist.
Police tell radio stations WSGW and WWJ that 43-year-old Trooper Jeffrey Werda from the Bridgeport post was responding to a call for backup when he crashed early Wednesday in Saginaw County's Taymouth Township. Police say Werda was an 11-year state police veteran who had worked at the Bridgeport post for about four years.
The crash happened about 70 miles northwest of Detroit.
Police say the chase began in the Chesaning area after authorities tried to stop a motorist for an equipment violation, and the motorist later was caught.
The post plans to release a statement later in the day.

Another life lost in the line of duty. These men and women only scratch at the surface on how risky their jobs in order to protect us.

The cops were chasing someone over an "equipment violation"...what the heck does that mean??? Was it a tail-light out? Whatever the issue, was it worth a man's life to pursue it? You'll find no one more critical of the police than me, but to hear about a cop being killed over this is a sad thing. RIP sir, and our hearts go out to the family.
