LANSING - Armed with an assault rifle and wearing a bullet-proof vest, a fugitive is captured in Lansing after a two-hour stand-off. A SWAT team surrounded a home in the 3200 block of Rayborn Drive, near Holmes & Waverly Road, at around 9:30 Thursday night.
Lansing police had received a tip that a man who had escaped from custody in August, and had numerous weapons charges outstanding, was inside that home. Police considered the man armed and very dangerous.
At about 11:30PM, the fugitive left the back of the house and was captured by police in the back yard of the home. Police say the man was carrying a SKS assault rifle, 2 handguns and wearing a bullet-proof vest when he caught. The man did not fire at officers.
The fugitive has been identified as 27-year-old Christopher Joseph Atkins of Lansing. He was jailed on the previous a concealed weapons and possession charges. He was arraigned Friday on additional charges of possssion of firearms by a felon, possession of body armor by a violent felon, altering identification marks of a firearm, and felony firearm.
