Spring Arbor Car Accident Kills 16-year-old

A 16-year-old is dead after a fatal, one-car accident in Spring Arbor Township early Sunday morning.

The male driver lost control of his vehicle while traveling westbound on Cox Road in Spring Arbor Township around 4:30 a.m., according to a Michigan State Police news release. The driver's 1996 Chevy Camaro left the road and struck a large tree.

The 16-year-old was the only one in the vehicle. State Police say they believe speed may have been a factor, but alcohol was not. Police continue to investigate the crash.

The name of the driver has not been confirmed, but social media posts indicate that Colton Aukerman was the boy killed in the crash. Students are urged to bring handwritten letters to Western High School school today to be taped on Colton's locker. Students are also urged to wear blue, which was his favorite color. Students and community members gathered at Western Sunday night to pay tribute.
